PATRON SAINTS AND DEVOTIONS

The festivities of the Assumption and San Roque, on the 15th and 16th of August, together with the Corpus Christi festivities, were the main festivities in Dénia.

SAN ROQUE, PATRON OF THE CITY

Since the 15th century, San Roque, protector saint against epidemics and plague, had a hermitage in Dénia. In 1643 he became the patron saint of Dénia.

The feast of Saint Roque was celebrated with theatre. In the square in front of the Town Hall, awnings were put up and a stage was set up. The artists, sometimes young people from Dénia, dressed up with beards and costumes. They were given wine, sweets and chickens.

OUR LADY OF AUGUST: THE ASSUMPTION

It was the oldest devotion in Dénia and the titular of the church since its foundation in the 13th century.

Fire crackers were always present in the festivities of the Assumption. They were bought in Dénia, but on special occasions they were also bought in València.
