The city of Dénia and the mourning for the 5th Marquis, Duke of Lerma

400 years after the death of the 5th Marquis. 1625-2025

Panel 4-5

THE “ GRAMALLAS”

The gramallas, made of red damask cloth, were the solemn costumes of the city’s juries (municipal government).
After the War of Spanish Succession, with the triumph of the Bourbons in 1707, the old Valencian government system was abolished and the use of gramallas was forbidden.
In Dénia they ended up being used to cover the church pews.
